When you’re starting out in the world of guitar playing, it can be tricky to know what to play. A great way to kickstart your playing is to learn some classic riffs. In this article, I’ll tell you 5 of my go to riffs for beginner guitar players. Each one of these riffs will allow you to work on your accuracy, your coordination between your hands, and your finger dexterity. These are all very important skills as you progress on your guitar journey.
The riffs can be played on acoustic or electric guitar, although the original versions were all electric guitar recordings.
There is also a quick video to accompany this which I have posted down at the bottom of the page! Here are the top 5 easy guitar riffs for beginner guitar players.
Cream – Sunshine of Your Love
This Eric Clapton riff from the late 1960s is a great riff to get you started with moving between strings. It’s got plenty of spacing between notes to allow you to get your fingers to the next place in time. When you’re working on this, try to use more than one finger, although it is possible to play this with a single finger, it’s good practise to get more than one finger in use.
Rolling Stones – (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction
This riff is so much fun to play. It’s Keith Richards simplicity at its finest. Three notes, one string. What more do you need to write a killer rock riff? Crank the gain and have some fun with this.
White Stripes – Seven Nation Army
This is another single note riff that is a lot of fun to learn. It’s all on the A string and covers a lot of ground with some big movements up and down the string. This is great for learning to find your way around a single string of the guitar.
Deep Purple – Smoke on the Water
Now we’re moving into playing multiple strings at the same time. The notes in this riff are known as Double Stops (More on that inside my guitar course – sign up here to learn). Double Stops can be played with a single finger, or you can use two fingers, whatever is easiest.
This is a classic riff that everyone will know, but be careful about busting this one out in your local guitar store! They’ve probably heard it way too many times!
Black Sabbath – Iron Man
Now the final, and most rocking riff in the list, Black Sabbath’s Iron Man. This riff uses a series of two string chords known as power chords. Power chords are the chords of rock! This is an essential chord shape to learn for rock music. You’ll notice the whole riff is the same chord shape but moved around one string. Take your time with the slides, the first time you try to slide a power chord can be tricky!
